How to get from Muscat airport to Qurum, Mutrah or Ruwi

Choose your Muscat district, then compare the airport bus, licensed taxi apps, official taxi area and hotel transfers.

Muscat does not have one compact centre, so an airport transfer begins with choosing the right destination. Al Khuwair is closer to the airport side of the urban area; Qurum sits farther east; Ruwi and Mutrah are farther east again. Muscat International Airport’s access guide places the terminal on Sultan Qaboos Road between Muscat and Al Seeb.

The practical choice is:

  • Take a taxi for a direct hotel drop-off, substantial luggage or a late and tiring arrival.
  • Investigate the public bus if cost matters, you are travelling light and your accommodation is close to a current stop.
  • Choose the district before the transfer. A room far from the places you intend to visit can add cross-city journeys throughout the stay.

Airport transport at a glance

Option Best for Main drawback
Mwasalat public bus Light luggage and accommodation close to a current stop It may require a walk, transfer or separate final ride
Licensed taxi app Booking through an app with an exact destination Requires a working phone and data connection
Airport taxi office and taxi area A direct ride without arranging an app pickup Confirm how the fare will be calculated before leaving
Prearranged hotel transfer Meeting a driver or shuttle arranged before travel Availability and price depend on the property

Taking the bus from Muscat airport

Mwasalat buses use the bus station on the ground floor outside the airport building, according to the airport’s ground-transport information. The airport also directs passengers to Mwasalat for schedules and stop locations.

Routes and timetables can change, so check the journey for your arrival date rather than relying on an old route number or timetable. Confirm:

  1. the destination displayed on the bus;
  2. the stop nearest your accommodation;
  3. the final departure time;
  4. the current fare and accepted payment method; and
  5. the walk or onward ride required from the stop.

A bus is most useful when the last section is simple. A short distance on a map may still involve an inconvenient road crossing or an exposed walk with luggage. If you would need a second ride after the bus, compare the whole journey with a direct taxi.

For Mutrah, do not assume that an airport bus will deliver you to the Corniche or souq; check the final connection explicitly. For Ruwi, search the current Mwasalat journey to the exact hotel or stop rather than treating the district name as sufficient.

Airport taxis and app bookings

The airport says its taxi office is in the public arrivals hall and that taxis depart from the taxi area outside the main terminal. Its taxi guidance also says city taxi drivers are required to use taximeters for price regulation. Before leaving, confirm with the desk or driver whether your airport ride will be metered or quoted and what charges apply.

App pickup is another option. In March 2024, the Times of Oman reported that passengers could book airport rides through the ministry-licensed Otaxi and Oman Taxi applications. Use a current in-app quote and follow the pickup instructions shown in the app rather than relying on an old online fare table; the original announcement establishes the approved apps, not today’s price.

For a smoother pickup:

  • enter the accommodation’s exact name and district, not simply “Muscat”;
  • check that the map pin is on the correct property;
  • follow the app’s stated meeting point;
  • match the vehicle and driver details before getting in; and
  • ask how the fare will be calculated if taking a taxi from the airport area.

The terminal provides two hours of free internet, and three telecom branches in arrivals sell or top up phone lines, according to the airport’s passenger FAQ. Save a screenshot of the hotel name, address, phone number and map pin in case connectivity fails.

Which Muscat destination should you enter?

Al Khuwair: reduce travel from the airport side

Al Khuwair can be a practical base when plans are spread across modern Muscat rather than concentrated around Mutrah. It lies west of Qurum, Ruwi and Mutrah, reducing how far east the initial airport transfer needs to go. Check the exact property, however: the district name is less useful to a driver than a hotel name and pin.

Transfer choice: taxi for the simplest arrival; bus only if the current stops line up clearly with the accommodation.

Qurum: a middle position

Qurum is a middle-ground choice for travellers dividing their time between the western side of Muscat and the older eastern districts. Use a precise destination such as the accommodation name near Qurum Beach, Qurum Natural Park or the Royal Opera House Muscat rather than asking for “the centre.”

Transfer choice: a direct taxi is the least complicated option. Consider the bus only after checking the final walk or connection.

Mutrah: for the Corniche and souq

Enter Mutrah and the accommodation name if you are staying by Mutrah Corniche or Mutrah Souq. A vague request for “Muscat city” does not identify this eastern waterfront district.

Mutrah suits a trip focused on the Corniche and souq, but its position east of Qurum and Ruwi means a longer airport journey than a stay in Al Khuwair. It also adds westbound travel when visiting places around Qurum or the airport side of Muscat.

Transfer choice: direct taxi or a prearranged hotel transfer. Use the bus only after confirming the complete journey and deciding that it is manageable with your luggage.

Ruwi: consider connections as well as the room

Ruwi is inland from Mutrah. It can be a useful destination when the accommodation, business or onward connection is in Ruwi itself, but it should not be used as a substitute destination for a hotel on Mutrah Corniche.

Transfer choice: check the current Mwasalat planner because a bus may be useful when the stops fit your journey. A taxi remains simpler when the hotel is away from the route or you arrive with substantial luggage.

A simple arrival plan

Before flying, save the accommodation pin and identify whether it is in Al Khuwair, Qurum, Ruwi, Mutrah or another district. On arrival, compare the complete Mwasalat journey with a licensed-app quote or the airport taxi option. Account for the walk, wait and any second ride—not just the first fare.

Also ask the accommodation about an airport transfer. The airport says some hotels and tour operators provide prearranged buses and advises passengers to arrange these through the property or travel agent before travel in its ground-transport guide. Confirm whether the service is complimentary or charged and where the representative will meet you.
